Winter hiking day 5 Bolsena. Hermitage and hermit cave.

Hiking, Blog

The cherry on the cake.

Our starting point for all walks and walking holidays is the town Bolsena at the eponymous Lake Bolsena.

Not a long walk today, but a very special one. Years ago, it took me three days to find this place. When I finally found it I was so moved by the atmosphere and beauty of it. I still think it’s a party with a small group of guests to visit this place and enjoy it together.

The last time I was here was September 2019 with my blind and visually impaired guests. Wow, what an experience that was. To be on the road with people who experience a special walk to be just as special as I experience it, but using completely different senses for that.

Where in our society we are very focused on seeing and being seen, guiding a group of blind and partially sighted people takes on a completely different dimension.

With “my” blind guests September 2019

Back to now

Through an open area with many poppies in spring we follow a sandy path to a special valley. Years ago you had to go through a gate to get here. At the time, there was a note on the gate stating the positive warning that you were about to enter an extraordinary area. With the comment that it was a quiet area.

Just like the sign, the gate has long since gone. The way to the valley has become more common over the years. Where I always carried a stick with me to clear the path of nettles and blackberries it is nowadays a bit easier to walk.

Despite the absence of the note, I ask my guests to enter the area silently. When you are quiet you really experience the power and the beauty of the place.

At the end of the valley we arrive at a natural waterfall with a high situated hermitage and hermit cave.

In the midst of the overwhelming nature, we come face to face with the frescoes and symbols carved in the tuff.

I tell the story of the hermitage, the hermit’s cave and the place itself. From Etruscans to Templar until now.

Slowly it is time to detach ourselves from this jewel and find a sunny spot to have our lunch.

As everything comes to an end, our winter hiking week has also reached the end. It was amazing.
