Mariët Bloemendal.

wandelvakantie etrusken volg de rode schoentjes

Ciao, I am Mariët Bloemendal, the creative mastermind and passionate Italy expert of Volg de Rode Schoentjes.
Volg de Rode Schoentjes specializes in extraordinary experience and discover holidays in Italy.
My mission is to let you enjoy authentic central Italy in a special way. Far away from mass tourism, I organize and create a base in which you will discover and experience a real Italian holiday.

I guide all the walking holidays of Volg de Rode Schoentjes myself. I look forward to going winter hiking with you. An extraordinary experience holiday in your life.
The walks have been personally plotted by me and the wineries have been selected separately for this week. I would like to share this special experience with you.

Curious with whom you are going for a walk? I cordially invite you to read more about me via my blog.

Last summer I had an interview with Libelle magazine. Article Libelle and at the beginning of this year in the magazine Zin.

Dear Mariet,
What a great week I had, one beautiful view after another. Delicious wines, fun and fantastic places to eat and laugh every day. How I enjoyed where you took me. With you I got to meet the real Italy with all its charm and laughable moments. I have been openly received by you, your friends and the beautiful town.
Thanks for everything!

Larissa Linger

The walking holiday was very cool. Mariët takes care of everything, which meant that all I had to do was put one foot in front of the other. Every day a totally different experience; hard to say which was the best; the via cava, the Pyramida Etruska, the sunrise or the hermit caves (literally to make you silent). I also enjoyed the fun and togetherness.
And compliments to Maria, who cooked so wonderfully for us.

Mirjam Blom

Dear Mariet,
How I enjoyed it, and what a gift we received on our path.
Thank you for all the beauty you showed us.
I got so much energy that I enjoyed Sunday extra with the family.
With kind regards,

Atjai

Program

Day-to-day program:

The days and times we go out may vary. In essence, the program remains the same.
Day 1 : Arrival in Bolsena from 4 pm. We welcome you with a nice local wine and antipasti. In the evening there is a welcome dinner in Bolsena.
D ay 2: Relaxing from the trip. Possibility to participate in a walk through the town of Bolsena.
Day 3 : Hiking day Montefiascone to Bolsena (5 hours) with wine tasting at winery Mazziotti. Departure from the historic town of Monte Fiascone, located high on the hill. In ancient times, envoys from Etruscan city-states gathered in Monte Fiascone for their annual gatherings. In the 13th century, many popes’ residences were built in and around the city, which lies on the Franconian Way to Rome. Now Monte Fiascone owes its fame mainly to the white wine Est! Est !! Est !!! This is produced in the area and you can of course taste it on one of the numerous terraces. At the highest point of the city is the Dom, its enormous baroque dome towers above everything. From the city you have a magnificent view of and over the lake and its islands. We walk to Bolsena on an ancient footpath of the Franciscans, in which you have to climb and descend lightly through the hills. In Bolsena we pay a visit to the Mazziotti winery. Here we will taste the special wines of the winery and we will reflect on the famous story of the “Est Est, Est”.
Mazziotti is an old winery from the year 1900 in the hills around Bolsena. The vines are on volcanic soil, bathed in the sun on the south. The grapes are grown according to ancient techniques without herbicides and pesticides. The family harvests the grapes at different times and at different stages of maturity and vinified separately. You can taste the love for making wine when you uncork a bottle.
Day 4 : St. Quirico – Sorano and back (5 hours) We start with an exciting first walking day. We walk from the village of St. Quirico through a beautiful area to the imposing village of Sorano, situated on a plateau. We follow the high and long reefs of the ancient Etruscan town of Vitozza with its dwellings and caves along the plateau sides. On top of the plateau of old Vitozza are the remains of a 15th century church and two castles. A little further on we visit a columbarium from the Etruscan / Roman era. We descend via ancient stone hollow roads and visit the source and the waterfall of the river Spring. We eventually cross it and from there continue walking across a field to Via Cava di San Rocco, a hollow road from the time of the Etruscans. The view of the breathtakingly beautiful Sorano is fantastic. We have lunch near the river de Lente. After lunch, there is plenty of opportunity to visit Sorano and then walk back to St. Qurico.
Day 5 : Hike Monte Bisenzio 3/4 hours and from San Lorenzo to Bolsena 3 hours. We get up early today for the sunrise silent walk to Monte Bisenzio, a special Etruscan site on Lake Bolsena. We have breakfast in an Italian bar. Then we drive to San Lorenzo Nuovo and we walk over the hills to Bolsena. A nice walk with always a great view over Lake Bolsena, with its islands Isola Bisentina and Isola Martana.
Day 6 : Sovana – Pitigliano and back (5 hours). The walk is on old Etruscan roads. Along the route we see ancient burial chambers that have been there for thousands of years. We have lunch at an old waterhole. Then we visit the beautifully situated town of Pitigliano.
After the visit to Pitigliano we will visit the winery Sassotondo where we will enjoy a great wine tasting of organic wines
Day 7 : Eremo di PC (hermit cave) and Eremo del chiusa del Vescovo.
A special walk is on the program today. We walk through an area that was visited in earlier times by the Etruscans and later by the Templars and pilgrims. Here we find an old hermitage with hermitage next to a beautiful natural waterfall. Very impressive. After the picnic on the river Fiora we visit the second hermit cave in an opposite valley.
Day 8: The departure.

Travel details

Days: 8 days: 7 nights
Level: The walks are mostly on unpaved hiking trails and are easy to moderate.
Climate: Typical Mediterranean climate with warm summers.
Terrain: Through beautiful Mediterranean nature and along the remains of a rich history. Varied landscape with olive and pine trees, cypresses, vineyards, fields and grassland with numerous wild flowers. Volcanic hilly landscape, with valleys, rock formations and hollow roads cut from tuff.
Group size: We walk in small groups of 4 to 7 people. In this way it is easy to respond to personal wishes. The passenger van transports us every day to the starting point of the respective walk. Each day trip ends in an attractive, authentic village. From there it is decided when we will be picked up by the van.

All times mentioned are the average walking times. There will also be time for rest breaks, taking pictures and sightseeing.
To participate in the walking holiday you must be in a reasonable condition.
During our hikes you do not have to overcome huge differences in height and you do not need to wear special equipment. Make sure you have sturdy walking shoes, which are preferably well worn in. Good protection against the sun is absolutely necessary and also consider light rainwear.
You always stay in a “not your average”, unique location, which is beautifully situated. With an eye for peace and a good atmosphere.

I had a great wine walking holiday with Mariët. It was so nice. Visited special wineries, had special lunches (both at the wineries and the picnic on the way). For me it was a vacation for the books that I will not forget. And the new verb: winehike

Recently made the wine walking trip with a friend (and 2 other ladies) and when I started it I could not have imagined that this would be one of my best holidays !!!
Guided by Mariet, we went on beautiful and special walks and visited beautiful places.
Some parts in the walks were quite tough but “the reward” consisted of a very special wine tasting, both special with regard to the wines but also with regard to the locations of the different tastings and the owners, and stories of the owners, so “the tough parts “and the tiredness were soon forgotten.
Bolsena and surroundings are beautiful, no mass tourism and the people are very friendly and helpful.
Mariet is a very special hostess/guide/tour leader, a warm person. She does everything she can to make the guests feel at home so that it becomes a special experience for them. Everything is, or will be, arranged by her and small changes in the program in the meantime is no problem. We really felt pampered.
One of the ladies mentioned that “wine walking” would be a nice new verb. I totally agree, as far as I’m concerned one of the nicest verbs there is.
This trip was a very special experience and definitely a must for anyone who
loves wine and walking and wants to do something different on holiday.
