Walking from Sovana to Pitigliano and back.
Today we discover one of Europe’s most beautiful cultural walks.
Put on your walking shoes and join the Follow the Rode Schoentjes.
This morning we start in the beautiful Italian village, Sovana. A small village where the Etruscans already lived 2500 years ago. Before we put on our backpack, there is time to discover Sovana. In the Middle Ages, Sovana was the county capital of the very influential Aldobrandeschi family. The bishop resided here until 1660.
After we enjoyed Sovana, it is high time to start hiking. wwe leave Sovana and visit the Etruscan necropolis Folonia. While walking we have a beautiful view of Sovana and the mountains, including Monte Amita, the highest mountain in southern Tuscany. The walk continues on ancient Etruscan roads. A unique and magnificent experience. The highlight is the via cava di San Giuseppe and an authentic water source (fountain). We have lunch at this fountain.
After lunch we visit Pitigliano. The old city, originally Etruscan, is a jewel with its narrow streets, fountains and gates, which sits proudly on a rock. After this beautiful visit we will return to Sovana.
